Carnitine is a non-essential amino acid formed in the kidneys from the
amino acids lysine and methionine. (“Non-essential” means the body is
able to produce the amino acid).
Carnitine aids in converting fatty acids into energy used by the
muscles throughout the body. It is stored in the skeletal muscles,
heart, brain and sperm. An inadequate carnitine level may present
itself in symptoms including confusion, heart pain, muscle weakness and
obesity.
Because the heart contains the most carnitine of any organ there are
several heart or circulation conditions which may benefit from
additional carnitine intake. The heart requires a lot of energy and
carnitine appears to help it function better. Two separate studies have
shown that added carnitine is particularly helpful in reducing angina
(chest pain).
It has also been suggested by studies that individuals who take
carnitine shortly after a heart attack may be less likely to suffer
another heart attack, die of heart disease, experience chest pain or
develop congestive heart failure (CHF). Other studies appear to
indicate that carnitine may be beneficial for those already suffering
from CHF.
A decrease in blood flow to the legs from atherosclerosis can
cause pain or aching in the legs and impede walking. The condition is
known as intermittent claudication. Studies showed significant
improvement in muscle function and exercise capacity of those with
intermittent claudication who took carnitine supplements.
